5.5 Audience Demographics
Overview
When creating digital content or products, it is important to understand the audience. This is called audience demographics. Demographics are pieces of information that describe groups of people. They help businesses and organisations make sure their content reaches the right people.
One important factor is accessibility. This means making sure that people with disabilities, or people who need extra support, can still use the content. For example, subtitles in a video help people who are deaf or hard of hearing.
Another key factor is age. Different age groups may prefer different styles of content. A website for teenagers may look very different to one aimed at older adults.
Gender can also be considered. Content might be designed to appeal to specific genders, but it is important to avoid stereotypes and include everyone.
Finally, location matters. People in different countries or areas may have different interests, needs, or access to technology.
Technology in the news
Should Europe stop using US tech?
Most of Europe’s online services rely on just three US companies: Google, Microsoft, and Amazon. Experts worry that if political tensions grew, the US could block access and cause huge problems – hospitals, governments, and businesses could lose vital systems. This raises concerns about “digital sovereignty” – Europe’s dependence on foreign technology. Microsoft and others say Europe’s data is safe, but recent events show risks remain.
Discussion question: Should countries rely so heavily on foreign technology companies, or should they develop their own systems for safety and fairness?
