Overview
The Purpose, Importance and Use of HCI in Application Areas
Human–Computer Interaction (HCI) is about how people use and control technology. A good HCI makes systems easy, quick, and pleasant to use. Different application areas use HCI in different ways.
In banking, clear and secure screens help people make safe transactions.
Embedded systems like car dashboards or printers use simple controls so they’re safe and reliable.
Entertainment devices make games and media fun and engaging.
Fitness trackers and apps give feedback to help people stay healthy.
Home appliances use easy controls for safety and convenience.
Retail checkouts and websites help speed up shopping and keep stock records accurate.
Why HCI is used: Secure, fast, and easy transactions via ATMs (Automatic Telling Machine), online apps, and kiosks.
Importance: Reduces errors, improves accessibility, increases security awareness.
Advantages: 24/7 access, faster service, secure.
Disadvantages: Cyber-attack risk, excludes non-digital users.
Why HCI is used: Control devices with minimal computing resources (e.g., printers, car dashboards).
Importance: Safe use, minimal training, reliable operation.
Advantages: Easy to use, reliable, low power usage.
Disadvantages: Limited flexibility, difficult to update or repair.
Why HCI is used: Create immersive, engaging user experiences for games, streaming, and VR.
Importance: Keeps users engaged, simplifies complex interactions.
Advantages: High engagement, immersive experiences.
Disadvantages: Encourages excessive screen time, expensive hardware.
Why HCI is used: Track, display, and analyse physical activity and health data.
Importance: Motivates healthy habits, real-time feedback, supports goal setting.
Advantages: Motivating, personalised tracking.
Disadvantages: Data privacy risks, reliance on technology.
Why HCI is used: Make appliances simple and safe to operate.
Importance: Saves time, improves safety and efficiency.
Advantages: Convenient, energy efficient.
Disadvantages: Higher cost, repairs if interface fails.
Why HCI is used: Speed up purchasing and stock control (e.g., self-checkouts, e-commerce).
Importance: Faster service, accurate stock control.
Advantages: Reduces queues, improves accuracy.
Disadvantages: Job losses in some roles, faults can stop service.

Council website down as group claims cyber-attacks
Suffolk County Council’s website and several other local sites, including those for the Suffolk Chamber of Commerce and Harwich Town Council, were taken offline in a denial-of-service (DoS) cyber-attack. The attack bombards a site with excessive traffic, making it inaccessible. The council confirmed it is working to restore affected services, and a group on social media claimed responsibility.
Discussion point:
Is launching a denial-of-service attack ever justifiable (for protest, hacktivism, etc.)? What legal protections exist against such actions, and where should the line be drawn between activism and criminal cyberattack?
